List of US States with Abbreviations, Capitals and Nicknames

List of us states with capitals and zipcodes

The United States comprises fifty constituent states and a capital district. Their names are commonly used and some of them are quite long, so they are often abbreviated in written documents and on mailing addresses. These two-letter, no period, state abbreviations are recommended by the U.S. Postal Service and should always be used where a ZIP code follows. The largest state by population is California. The largest state by area is Alaska, with the territory of 665,384 square miles. New York is the largest city, and Washington, D.C. is the capital.

How and when to use the State Abbreviations
  • In the written matter, when the name of the US state stands alone, do not use the abbreviation.
  • Always put a comma between the name of the city and the abbreviation of the state.
  • Use the comma after the abbreviation, but only if the sentence does not end at that point.
  • Only use the Postal abbreviations with addresses that have the zip code.
  • The periods are not used after the abbreviations, only in the case, that the sentence ends there.
  • No space between the letters, and only uppercase.
  • You should use Postal abbreviations for states only in forms, address blocks and lists and tabular material.
